LED tube retrofit on the Lake Zurich Ferry Horgen–Meilen

By upgrading to GLT LED TUBES, the Lake Zurich Ferry Horgen–Meilen now meets the highest standards in maritime lighting. The GLT LED TUBES comply with EN 60092-306:2009-11, the international standard for electrical installations on ships. Ship lighting must perform reliably at temperatures ranging from –40 °C to +70 °C – a challenge that the heat- and cold-resistant GLT LED tubes are perfectly designed to meet.

The Challenge

The previous lighting system on the Lake Zurich Ferry was energy-intensive, maintenance-heavy, and unsuitable for the extreme temperature fluctuations encountered during ship operation. A robust, standard-compliant and sustainable LED lighting system was required — one that could guarantee safety, efficiency and reliability in demanding maritime environments.

The Solution – LED Retrofit with GLT LED TUBE

On the Lake Zurich Ferry Horgen–Meilen, the existing lighting system was completely converted to GLT LED TUBES “Made in Germany.”
The implementation was carried out as a 1:1 retrofit replacement of the old T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes – fast, safe, and without any structural modifications.

The ENEC-certified LED tubes comply with EN 60092-306:2009-11 and are specifically designed for use in marine and ship lighting systems. Thanks to their tested temperature resistance from –40 °C to +70 °C, they ensure maximum reliability and safety – even under extreme climatic conditions at sea.

With annual energy savings of 8,550 kWh and a payback period of just one year, the new lighting delivers measurable improvements in energy efficiency and sustainability for the ferry operation.
In addition, the maintenance-free and long-lasting GLT LED TUBES significantly reduce maintenance requirements – a major advantage for use in hard-to-access areas on board.

The conversion to GLT LED TUBES thus provides a modern, robust, and energy-efficient lighting solution that fully meets the high demands of maritime infrastructure in every respect.

Key advantages of our LED retrofit for the Lake Zurich Ferry Horgen–Meilen:

  • Energy-efficient LED lighting with annual savings of 8,550 kWh and a payback period within one year.
  • ENEC-certified LED tubes in accordance with EN 60092-306:2009-11, specially developed for marine and ship lighting systems.
  • Reliable operation under extreme temperatures from –40 °C to +70 °C, ideal for maritime conditions at sea.
  • Virtually maintenance-free and long-lasting solution that ensures safety, sustainability, and efficiency in ferry operations.

"Since the cost of electricity on board a ship is roughly three times higher than on land, switching to GLT LED TUBES is even more worthwhile."
