The Challenge

Lighting in cleanroom areas presented Octapharma with specific challenges. The previous T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes contained hazardous substances, generated high energy costs, required frequent maintenance, and no longer met the stringent standards of modern medical and pharmaceutical production. A lighting solution was needed that was energy-efficient, low-maintenance, and cleanroom-compatible, without costly structural modifications.

The Solution – LED Retrofit with GLT LED TUBE

In the pharmaceutical production facilities of Octapharma Stockholm, the existing lighting system was converted to 2,499 GLT LED TUBES “Made in Germany”, implemented as a 1:1 retrofit solution without any structural modifications or production interruptions. The IEC/EN 62776-certified LED tubes meet the highest standards of hygiene, safety, and energy efficiency, specifically developed for use in sensitive areas such as cleanrooms, laboratories, operating theaters, and office spaces. The existing cleanroom certification remains fully valid.

The existing luminaires were converted in accordance with EN standards, and the old ballasts were removed. The LED driver is fully integrated into the GLT LED TUBE.

Thanks to its protected design, long service life of up to 130,000 hours, and maintenance-free operation, the new lighting system makes a significant contribution to operational safety and process stability. With annual energy savings of 204,202 kWh and a payback period of just 13 months, the retrofit delivers tangible cost efficiency and a notable improvement in CO₂ performance.
