LED retrofit at Estrella – GLT LED TUBE for food production

The Challenge

In food production, strict regulations apply regarding hygiene, safety, and operational efficiency. The old T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps contained hazardous materials, caused high energy costs, required frequent maintenance, and were neither shatterproof nor RoHS-compliant – posing a serious risk to both production reliability and food safety.

The Solution – LED Retrofit with the GLT LED TUBE

A total of 2,062 outdated T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes were upgraded to GLT LED TUBES “Made in Germany” at Estrella in Gothenburg using a 1:1 LED retrofit in full compliance with IEC/EN 62776. The conversion was carried out during ongoing production. The IFS-compliant, shatterproof LED tubes meet the strictest requirements for food safety and hygiene.

The existing luminaires and mounting systems were converted according to EN standards, and the old ballasts were removed. The LED driver is fully integrated into the GLT LED TUBE, enabling staff without electrical qualifications to replace the tubes safely. Maintenance requirements are reduced to an absolute minimum thanks to an exceptionally long service life of up to 130,000 hours.

The new LED lighting meets all technical standards and legal requirements regarding quality, energy efficiency and sustainability. With the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) of the GLT LED TUBE, all environmental impacts of the lighting system can be documented transparently.
